Yorkshire Main (0) 1  Thorne Colliery (1) 1

Late drama keeps Hoppers on their toes

A goal in the final minutes was just what the travellers wanted to get their Easter Hop off to a cracking start at Edlington Lane. Visitors Thorne had been the better side for much of the game and led through a well taken first half penalty. But it was a great fightback by the Yorkshire Main boys who rallied late on to take a share in the spoils.

What a smashing little venue! With a giant colliery wheel proudly on display at the main entrance and a landscaped slag heap overlooking proceedings visitors are soon made aware of the club roots. Even the unique concrete post and hefty chain fence surrounding the pitch was once a feature of  the local coal industry. Space was at a premium as travellers occupied all sides of this tight arena to create a great atmosphere.

Askern Welfare (4) 5  Appleby Frodingham (0) 0

Visitors feel the benefit from Welfare visit

The was no shortage of goals at the Sports Ground as Askern dominated this Supreme fixture. Hoppers had hardly taken up their places pitchside when the hosts took the lead inside the first minute. By the interval they were four up and coasting to a comfortable victory. In truth the scoreline could have been more but the woodwork and some showboating helped Appleby to weather the storm. The playing surface was hard and bumpy after the spell of warmer weather leading up to the match.

The ground is surprisingly basic with only a small cover and dug outs on the far side.. The pitch has a sturdy post and rail surround. Players change inside a large two storey pavilion situated behind the nearest goal. Team lists are  displayed on the wall for travellers to note those all-important line-ups.

Hatfield Main (0) 1  Louth United (0) 0

Dour struggle settled by piece of magic!

Hoppers gathered in large numbers for the third game of the Hop hosted by Hatfield Main FC. A tight match with very few chances was settled midway through the second half when a quickly taken free from outside the box beat the stranded keeper. A moment of pure magic!

The Dunscroft ground has loads of character. A dated covered terrace sits proudly behind the nearest goal. A string of buildings including the clubhouse, tea bar and changing rooms are hemmed in alongside the touchline.

A smart 28 page programme complete with red card cover is issued for £1. A club photo from 1953 is reproduced in the centrefold to break up the plethora of advertising material.

My chauffeur OS and I had already been to Harworth CI and all three Saturday venues so after a quick shandy it was back to East Anglia. Three new grounds, three ticks and a chance to meet many old (and not so old) mates. Oh the joys of the CML Easter Hop!!
