Report

Louth United (1) 3 Yorkshire Main (1) 1

West gives United a glimmer of hope

Prompted by Andrew Gallon's terrific report (see TT No.102), I made the long and ardous journey into deepest Lincolnshire to take in Louth United's CML Premier Division fixture against Yorkshire Main. With news of an imminent ground move it meant time was running out for hoppers to visit the Park Avenue ground.

Andrew's article offers a superb ground description so there is no need for duplicity here. It is obvious though that the club has seen better times and no doubt witnessed larger crowds than the few hardy souls who turned up on this mild spring evening to cheer on their heroes.

There was little to separate between the two sides in a fairly even opening half. Louth opened the scoring when the stocky, quick-paced Adam West stole in at the far post to convert a low cross. The visitors from Doncaster nicked one back before half-time which was just reward for their commitment. But it was that man West again who gave Louth the points through a scintillating second half-performance; a cracking 35 yard volley was followed up minutes later with a low drive which somehow beat the keeper after it was struck from the tightest of angles.

Rumours about the ground move still seem a little confused. Yes the club is moving from Park Avenue but to where no-one was really sure. One of the locals told us that United may be setting up camp in the village of Smallfleet some seven miles. At the moment its just a bareen plot of land. Another thought that the club would be ground-sharing in a bid to maintain their CML status next season. Hmmm. I shouldn't imagine the property developers are really too fussed either way as their bulldozers wait patiently like vultures to rip the place apart!
