'Street remain on course for success

Since gaining promotion from the Mid Essex League Potter Street Football Club has adapted well to life in the Essex Olympian League. A glimpse at the current league table reflects this showing only a couple of defeats and an impressive defensive record with the least number of goals conceded of all member clubs this season. They have also beaten better opposition in cup games accounting for Canning Town and Epping in some of the earlier rounds.

This Division Three fixture kicked off at 1.30pm as part of a double header to accomodate the reserves who started later at 4 o'clock. The game was played in bright sunny conditions on a well grassed pitch in front of  thirteen spectators which included a couple of 'hoppers. The match was affected by a strong cross-wind and chances were few as both teams battled to control and pass the ball accurately. It was Potter Street who eventually nicked the points though by scoring a goal at the end of each half; this was  much to the chagrin of visitors Barnston who were, in truth, unlucky to come away without a point.  This keeps the host's promotion hopes alive and with several games in hand over leaders Metpol Chigwell and M&B, the league title could be theirs at the end of the season.

The club is based at the Church Langley Country Park. Although this conjures up an idyllic image of beauty the reality is quite different as the main facilities are rather spartan. The site comprises of  an expanse of open playing fields prepared for cricket and football. There are a couple of portakabins incorporating changing rooms and a tea bar next to the main pitch which is fully roped off. As you would expect there is no cover. The club does not issue programmes but helpful secretary Mr Thorp responded favourably to our request for a half-time cuppa' dispensed free of charge. What service!

The club is easily reached by coming off the M11 at the Harlow turn off (junction 7). Continue along the A414 (Potter Street by-pass) crossing two roundabouts. At the next one turn right down Church Langley Way passing the large Tesco superstore on your left. Take the next left turn into Aynsley Gardens and fork left and then right along the narrow road (at the back of Tesco) before arriving at the main car park. A small path leads to the 'pavilion' and football pitches.
