Curzon put the breaks on Leamington

I must admit that I really enjoy watching FA Vase games. This season has been no exception, having aatended a match in every round of the competition since it started back in August. With only eight teams remaining when the sixth round draw was made, I needed a bit of luck though.  And thankfully the gods were looking down on me from Soho Square because Curzon Ashton were awarded a home tie. You see they were the only club left in whose ground I had not yet been to. Furthermore, the prospect of seeing them play against Leamington was just too good an opportunity to miss!

Before the start of play both teams were second joint favourites behind Truro City to lift the title come May. The match was played in bright sunny conditions on a pitch that had been heavily sanded before kick-off.  And Leamington, backed by a large, vociferous band of travelling fans who hade made the trip up from Warwickshire, got off to the worst start imagineable when Curzon took the lead. A right-wing cross by mid-fielder James Ogoo was chested by defender James Pearcey past his own 'keeper, Adam Knight, on ten minutes. There was more trouble for the Brakes just before the interval when Nick Allen beat the offside trap to produce a classy finish and double Curzon's lead. With Leamington needing to push forward more, Ashton struck again midway through the second half; a long diagonal pass by Steve Moore opened the way for midfielder Liam Shirley to head the decisive third goal past the luckless Pearcey. The strike-force of Moore and Michael Norton (both top of the NWCL goal-scoring charts this season with 41 and 40 goals respectively) were causing increasing problems for the Leamington defence. Inevitably their constant pressure paid off and allowed Wayne Cahill to side-foot the ball in from close-range, notching Curzon's fourth. The Brakes did manage to pull a goal back seven minutes from time. Josh Blake beat three defenders to drill the ball home past Dave Carnell - but this was only consolation. There was only a whimper from the army of dejected supporters dressed in black and yellow. The day belonged to Curzon. Their players were roared off the field at the end by an enthusiastic home crowd. It was a truly fine display by a side who have only three times this season and who are still challenging FC Utd for the NWCL title. What a great advert for the league!

A terrific 56-page programme, priced £1.20 ,was issued for the game. Full of  topical news about the FA Vase, there is plenty to read with club items as well as stats supplied by the highly informative NWCL newsletter. Refreshments were available from a tea bar located under the home stand; however the menu was rather restricted and mostly reliant on some poor quality meat and potato pies; these quickly ran out due to the increased demand! Belch!

The images in the album will serve as a useful ground description of the new Tameside stadium. I can honestly say that the venue has some truly excellent facilities and travellers will not be disappointed with what they find. I was particularly impressed by the amount of terracing and cover which provide spectators with a superb uninterrupted view of the action from every conceivabled angle. A visit to the Tameside stadium comes highly recommended.
