Mountnessing (1) 2  Canning Town (1) 1

Champions don't have it all their own way

Like several other travellers, I decided to take advantage of this early kick-off opportunity, featuring the top two sides in the Essex Olympian League Second Division. Mountnessing were one of only few clubs to have already beaten champions Canning Town with a 2-1 victory back in March.

After a bright start the hosts opened the scoring after only two minutes when Jamie Lewis beat the 'keeper with a low right foot shot from 25 yards. Canning drew level just before the half hour mark when Larry Fatini scored from close range. After the interval the visitors could have taken the lead from the penalty spot but the home 'keeper Chris Howard made an excellent save to deny them. With ten minutes left Mountnessing took the lead again when Sener Suavol created space for himself to unleash a right foot shot into the bottom corner of the net. There was much celebration at full time as Mountnessing had not only secured second place but also completed a double over the champions.

The game was played in bright sunshine on a well grassed playing surface and attracted nearly fifty spectators. Sadly no programmes or refreshments were available.

The club play at the Henderson's Sports Club which is based in Harold Park (and not Mountnessing). It is very easy to find and is within a stone's throw of the main A12 dual carriageway and junction 28 of the M25. The main entrance is clearly visible at the end of Kenilworth Avenue, a culd-de-sac located in a pleasant residential area. There is plenty of car parking space alongside the narrow driveway which leads to the club house and changing pavilion on site. The main pitch is bordered by hedges and fencing along the near side and far end.
