Heath take the points in a dull spectacle

On Saturday I attended the Herts Senior County League Division One game between North Mymms and Hertford Heath. The club play at the recreation ground off Dellsome Lane in neighbouring Welham Green. The site, behind the local primary school, is in a beautiful tree-lined field with woods on one side and a meadow on the other. A small pavilion is found just inside the entrance. The facility is also used by the bowls club who share a small committee room/tea bar next to the changing rooms. The main pitch is surrounded by a neat perimeter fence on three sides (the area behind furthest goal is bordered by more trees). There is no cover.

The game was totally uninspiring. Visitors Hertford Heath took control of the game and scored all their goals in the second half, maintaining their promising start to the season and consolidating their position near the top of the First Division. They did look the better side by far. Although the watery autumn sun brought out the beautiful colours in the leafy surroundings, its angle in the sky did not help players or spectators to view proceedings.

Sadly the club do not issue programmes or provide refreshments. As the home official running the line remarked: 'If I wasn't doing this today there might have been a cup of tea!'  Mind you there was no charge for admission either. With only twelve in attendance I must confess that from my own personal experience this league does not seem to be that well supported; certainly visits to Knebworth and Allenburys earlier in the season appear to confirm my theory. But it was a tick as they say!

My journey involved negotiating the extensive roadworks around Baldock (where a new by-pass is under construction) before joining the A1(M). After passing through the Hatfield tunnel come off at Junction 3 and continue along the A1000 (Southway) following signs for Welham Green. Take a right turn off Dixons Hill Road into Dellsome Lane (next to a car showroom and parade of shops). The ground is about two hundred yards down here on the left hand side; a narrow driveway and small car park lead to the main pitch which is hidden from view behind the pavilion. Travellers may be interested to know that Welham Green station is about ten minutes walk from here.
