Scars heal with solid second half success...

'A midweek trip up through the Swaffham sticks saw the Wraymobile arrive at the tidy North Elmham Recreation ground in plenty of time for this Central & South Norfolk League Division One match. It was terrific to see both sets of players already out warming up on the pitch by six o'clock. Despite taking the lead the hosts lost their opening game of the season to a strong Scarning United side who replied with four well taken second half goals to take all the points.

The match, played on a sloping well grassed pitch in mainly bright conditions, was attended by forty spectators including a number of vocal visiting fans. I was also joined pitch side by hopper Paul (known as mx hornet on the NLM forum) who had driven the short distance from Norwich. A most knowledgeable traveller Paul has ticked off loads of clubs and grounds enjoying the thrill of local football in this part of the world.

North Elmham FC shares it facilities with the local cricket and tennis clubs at this enclosed tree-lined site in Holt Road. A small car park leads to a smart pavilion with kitchen and function room only a short distance from the main football pitch marked beyond the cricket square. The floodlit tennis courts are found in the top corner of the field. Although the club like all members of this competition does not issue programmes food and drinks are available from the tea bar at half-time.

Like many grass roots clubs North Elmham FC relies on the good will and commitment of a number of helpers. Thankfully affable secretary Jackie Price (whom many local hoppers may remember from her days in a similar role at Anglian Combination outfit Foulsham FC) a recent member of the committee. Tonight she was on hand to sort out the home kit; put up the goal nets; greet the visiting team and referee; take photos during the game; make the tea and then prepare hot dogs and burgers after the game for everyone. Phew! Thanks Jackie for the hospitality and complimentary burger and cuppa!

Travellers intending to make a visit to this friendly club will not be disappointed. You can reach the ground coming from either East Dereham or Swaffham both about six or seven miles away and approach via the B1145 (Back Lane or Elmham Road). The recreation ground is found just past the village crossroads close to the Kings Head pub.

Hoppers who are interested can find more matchday info by flagging up both the excellent NEFC club website and the regularly updated C&SNL competition website which in my opinion is one of the best for club, ground and fixture details anywhere in non league football'.
