That Feel good factor!

Feltwell is a small, thriving village located some ten miles to the west of Thetford in Norfolk. It is also the site of RAF Feltwell a former Second World War bomber station now used as a housing estate for personnel working at nearby RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath.

Feltwell United Football Club has a proud history with most players coming from the village itself. Indeed it was only a few weeks ago that I stumbled, by chance, across a fascinating collection of documented Football Memories archived on the excellent Welcome to Feltwell village website. Former club president Mr John Jacobs recalls with great fondness some of United's past glories:

'Feltwell Football Club had some excellent local players in the 1930s with the late Sid Maggs being hailed a local hero in both football and cricket. Feltwell won the Norfolk Primary Cup in 1936, a time when local people were great supporters of the club, probably because there was not much transport in those days, so more people stayed at home. At the end of the season "charity " matches were also very well supported, we played against teams like Methwold, Southery, Brandon, Feltwell RAF, Mundford and Northwold. These matches were classed as something special and almost all of the village would turn out to watch'.

'During this time we were privileged to see some excellent RAF players, and an odd one or two did join the village team. The late 1950s saw many trophies won with the "star prize' being the Norfolk Junior Cup in the 1958-59 season. This cup final was played at Carrow Road, Norwich. I had the honour of being captain for this match'.

Ex-player Mr Frank Edwards also recalls more amusingly: 'A Mr Ted Brown kept the Oak Hotel Public House and he used to mark out the pitch for us and put the nets up. Our headquarters were at the Oak pub where a pint of mild was 2d, then it went up to 4d, then became a small brown (bottled) ale at 4d. We had some excellent games against Brandon Town Street and we used to meet in Cup Finals. I remember one cup final when we played them, a chap called Charlie Mail played the entire match wearing two left boots (those were the days)'.

Indeed as I took my place at pitchside today I was joined by a small group of elderly supporters all former players who had amazingly turned out for the 'Greens' back in the 1950's. Incredibly they still had plenty of enthusiasm and spoke with great affection about their local football club not only in days gone by but also in more recent times too.

United gained promotion to the top division of the Central & South Norfolk League at the end of last season (pipping Northwold FC by just one point to the title). They have made an impressive start to the 2011-12 campaign by winning all of their three opening games and currently sit proudly at the top of the table (on goal difference). It's going to be a tough game today though as visitors Tacolneston currently lie in second place. By sheer coincidence they arrive at Feltwell on the back of three consecutive victories themselves including a couple of close high scoring games namely at Shropham (6-5) and at home to Thetford Rovers Reserves (5-4). On this evidence a tight game is in prospect for the neutral from racing HQ!

The match played in mainly cloudy conditions with some sunny intervals attracted nearly thirty spectators. The hosts took full control of proceedings (particularly in the first half) and won a hard fought game by a convincing 5-2 scoreline. Special mention must go to the impressive Roy Peckham who bagged himself four goals (with his hat-trick coming in the first forty minutes). The visitors from Attleborough battled well in the second half scoring twice with keeper Luke Eastman getting his name on the scoresheet after converting from the penalty spot on the hour mark. This win now consolidates United's place at the top of the First Division table.

The Feltwell playing fields are found a short distance from the main B1112 Wilton Road by turning down Paynes Lane. The basic but homely tree-lined venue is bordered by local housing and a perimeter wall at the far (Falcon Road) end. It shares its facilities with the local tennis club. A narrow entrance and separate adjoining car park with adjacent children's play ground leads to the playing area beyond. A small brick built changing pavilion which doubles as an equipment shed displays the club name over the door on a rectangular plaque.

The main unroped pitch not only has a wicked end to end slope (dropping away from the tennis courts) but has in places a very bumpy surface to boot. I certainly must give credit to all players for coping with this most difficult terrain! There are no pitchside facilites at the moment but a rectangular communal seat cemented alongside the tennis courts behind the top goal offers a bit of comfort and cover. The club is in the process of raising funds through the neighbouring Feltwell Social Club to part build an extension for the changing pavilion which I am told should be completed either by the end of this season or at the start of next.

I had thoroughly enjoyed my hop today and would recommend a visit to Feltwell United FC at any time. Forget facilities, programmes and catering - you will definitely receive a lovely warm welcome and be guaranteed a good competitive game of football here. As I have said before the Central & South Norfolk Football League is an excellent, well-run competition and deserves much praise. I've not seen a poor game in it yet.
