Monday 31st October - History of Darlaston Town FC: Neil Chambers - writes:

'Sir, Back in August you very kindly included a message on your site about the book I was writing on West Midlands League Premier Division Darlaston Town FC.

I am pleased to say I have now completed the book. This contains 220 pages and includes more than 100 photographs and images. It includes a short biography on all 115 players who have palyed for Darlaston and for Football League clubs including Manchester United, Spurs, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Wolves, WBA and many others. The book includes details of all playing squads from 1899 to the present as well as many personal stories from many players and family members of players dating back to the 1930s. Other facts included in the book are:

1. 5 FA Cup winners have played for them;
2. 2 England Internationals including an England Captain and One Welsh International have also played for them;
3. A former player scored a hat trick against Liverpool in a Division 1 (now Premiership) game;
4. Sir Stanley Matthews, John Charles, Bert Williams and Derek Dougan are just a few of the footballing greats who have played some part in the club's history;
5. The biggest transfer fee received is the equivalent of £42000 today;
6. The biggest ever home gate exceeds 7000;
7. 4 former players have gone on to manage in the Football League;

The book is self-financed and costs £7.50 plus £2.26 p&p. I wonder if you would be so kind as to include some publicity for the book on your website. If you want any more information then please email or call. Regards, Neil'.

Sunday 30th October - Latest Images: Bob Davies - It's Cambridgeshire County League action for Bob as he brings us a cracking selection of matchday pictures from a hop to Linton Granta (v Littleport Town) in the Premier Division fixture played yesterday...all now added to the new FGIF album gallery...

Bob writes (via E-Mail): 'With the unseasonal mild weather continuing decided to tick off another Kershaw Cambridgeshire League club. Promoted to the Premier Division this season were Linton Granta and there game against Littleport Town was my choice for Saturday. They play on the recreation ground next to the college, using the pavilion for the dressing rooms and refreshments. I was surprised to see such good support for the side as by kick off there were about 70 spectators present around the roped off pitch. The game finished with a 1-0 score line to the home side but despite the lack of goals it was tight but entertaining afternoon.

The big surprise of the afternoon was that Linton have now joined the small band of programme issuers in this League. A 16 page programme was available from the pavilion before the game and sold around the ground during the first half. It also doubles as a raffle ticket with a lucky number on the cover, this is drawn at half time. This particular issue sold out with one circuit of the ground! (50 copies) so I was told. I'll scan the cover and send it in during next week'.

Sunday 30th October - Latest Images: Andy Gallon - It's the thrill of the egg chase for Andy as he takes in the National League One fixture at Blaydon RUFC (v Jersey) played yesterday...now added to the Rugby Union album in the new FGIF gallery...

Andy comments (via E-Mail): 'Having to stay relatively local meant a choice of rugby union at Blaydon or Central Midlands League football at FC05 Bilsthorpe. And the kick and clap got the nod. Not a great decision, it turned out. Blaydon lost 12-6 to Jersey in a desperately poor National League One fixture at Crow Trees. The Channel Islanders scored two tries to nil, the second coming five minutes from time and clinching victory, just when it looked as though the half-time score of 6-5 would remain unchanged. The ground (in Swalwell rather than Blaydon) at least made the trip worthwhile. Its corrugated iron grandstand with wooden bench seats and grass covered terracing are the sort of artefacts disappearing from football. They make quite a contrast to the huge clubhouse, opened in 1996, and about 200 yards from the main pitch, which is railed off and floodlit. Surely, it has to be football next week?!'.

Monday 24th October - Latest Images: Gary Spooner - Wow!! Check out these superb ground photos taken at both the Zoo Stadion, home of Wuppertaler SV Borrusia (Regionalliga West) and at the Signal Iduna Park, home of Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga 1) during his recent German trip...now added to the new FGIF gallery...pixel perfection!

Gary notes (via E-Mail): 'Whilst in the region I couldn't pass up the opportunity of travelling again on the Schwebebahn - a fantastic hanging railway that rides high above the traffic, streets and river in Wuppertal. One of the stops along the line is Zoo Stadion, home of Wuppertaler SV Borrusia, another fantastic stadium with lots of terracing. I have now visited the stadium a few times but have yet to see a game there, something that I must rectify in the not too distant future'.

'It was raining like a wet weekend in Glasgow on Tuesday so we decided to escape the downpour by taking a tour of the Signal Iduna, home of Borussia Dortmund. Cost was 6 euros each and the tour lasted about an hour and a half. It was conducted by former Dortmund and Germany captain Aki Schmidt who gave everybody a signed photo at the end. Following the tour we went up to the top of the Dortmund Tower from where the aerial pictures were taken. Due to the wind and rain it was not a pleasant experience!'

Monday 24th October - Latest Images: Mandy Spooner - German Special! You'll really love Mandy's creative sephia and black and white matchday photos captured on a visit to Westphalia Herne FC (v Schwarz Weiss Essen (NRW Liga) on 16/10/11...now uploaded to the new FGIF album gallery...nice one Mandy!

Monday 24th October - Latest Images: Gary Spooner - German JPEGs!! Check out Gary's mouth-watering selection of ground, action and matchday pictures from the following matches: Borussia Monchengladbach (v Bayer 04 Leverkusen) in the Bundesliga 1 played on 15/10/11 and Westphalia Herne (v Schwarz Weiss Essen (NRW Liga) on 16/10/11...both now added to the new FGIF album gallery...

Gary writes (via -Mail): 'The first part of our German trip saw us travelling to Monchengladbach. Tickets had been acquired via the internet and arrived just three days after booking. A big advantage of having tickets posted is that they give you free train travel to and from the game from anywhere within the VRR region. For ourselves this meant a free return from Dortmund. From Monchengladbach (or Rheydt) station there are free shuttlebuses (and lots of them) to the ground. On entrance to the ground a FREE excellent 104 page A4 programme is given out. Food and drink are plentily available and you can pay by cash, unlike a lot of other German stadiums where a card system is used. Afterwards, despite the masses, the shuttlebus service was superbly organised and we were back at the station within 40 minutes of the game ending'.

'Westphalia Herne had been on my hitlist for a long time. I was not dissapointed! Capacity is listed as 32,000 with 4,500 seats. That means 27,500 capacity of fantastic terracing! The stand is impressive as well. Admission was 7 euros for myself and 5 euros for Mandy. 12 page A4 programme was 50 cents. Club shop inside ground sold lots of souvenirs including metal pin badges and a wonderful set of postcards from 1959 showing the ground with over 30,000 inside. These are also available online on the club website at http://www.westfalia-herne.de/. The photos don't really do the ground justice - it was stunning and would be greatly appreciated by anyone who loves what I call "proper" football grounds'!

WebEd - Can I take the opportunity to thank Gary (and Mandy) for the magnificent photos contributed from their recent trip to Germany...die Bilder sind absolut brillant!!

Monday 24th October - Latest Images: Bob Davies - Check out Bob's ace selection of matchday images from the United Counties League Div 1 clash at Olney Town (v Potton United) played on 22/10/11...all now added to the new FGIF album gallery...

Bob adds (via E-Mail): 'On Saturday I visited Olney Town for the visit of Potton United. With Olney sitting in second place and unbeaten facing a Potton side just one place of the bottom and without a League win all season the odds would have been on a home win. However sometimes it doesn't go to plan and Potton romped to a deserved 3-0 win. Funny game football, that's what makes it worth watching'.

Monday 24th October - Latest Images: Andy Gallon - Check out the latest terrific matchday photos from a trip to watch Roundhegians RUFC v Bramley Phoenix (Yorkshire Three) played on 22/10/11...now added to the Rugby Union album in the new FGIF gallery...

Andy writes (via E-Mail): 'With a view to keeping down travel costs, I plumped for rugby union again today. Roundhegians RUFC, from the affluent Leeds suburb of Roundhay, are just 24 miles from home, and therefore an easy 'tick'. The club, founded in 1926, have just resumed programme production, and with The Memorial Ground staging a top versus second fixture in Yorkshire Three, it was an ideal opportunity to get them out of the way. Roundhegians led 17-0 after 15 minutes and 23-6 at half-time. But opponents and Leeds rivals Bramley Phoenix hit back strongly in the second half, closing the gap to 23-16 before going down 33-26 in front of 90 (h/c) spectators on a gloriously sunny afternoon. In an entertaining encounter, Roundhegians scored four tries to two. The Memorial Ground is named after the 88 Roundhegians players killed during the Second World War. In a touching gesture, the club planted the same number of trees around the ground, which is an extremely pleasant two-pitch venue, albeit lacking cover. The programme ("nowt special", I was warned) turned out to be a simple four-pager. Nicely done, though, and of course far better than nothing'.

Thursday 20th October - Anglian Combination League News: Gyles Basey-Fisher - writes: 'You might not be aware that Sprowston Wanderers (Div 2) have now moved to Thorpe School, Laundry Lane, Norwich NR7 0XS and newcomers Hingham Athletic (Div 6) have moved their pitch to the far end of the complex, not something that bothers me, but some do like to do the pitch rather than the complex...'

'You probably know that Bangor City FC will be leaving its famous Farrar Road stadium in early 2012 to take up new residence at Nantporth, a brand new ground under development on the banks of the Menai Straits outside the city centre.

Farrar Road has been the home of Bangor City for nearly 100 years, and has played host to many famous matches, including of course, City’s memorable European games against continental giants such as Napoli and Atletico Madrid.

Groundhoppers wanting a last look at Farrar Road on matchday should check our official website http://www.bangorcityfc.com/index.php?p=ac218670.0.2.1 for details of upcoming first team and reserve matches.

Monday 17th October - Latest Images: Bob Davies - For his second game of the weekend Bob takes in the FA Sunday Cup 1st round tie at St Josephs (Luton) v Crawley Green (Sunday) played yesterday at Biggleswade United FC...view all the essential matchday images...now added to the new FGIF album gallery...

Bob writes (via E-Mail): 'Today (sunday) saw the first round of this seasons F.A. Sunday Cup. Plenty of matches around the area but my chosen game was St Josephs F.C. (Luton) v Crawley Green Sunday played at Biggleswade United's Second Meadow ground. St Joseph's (Luton) have been five times finalist in this competition winning it first in 1995 and retaining the trophy in 1996. Two more finals have seen them defeated on penalties and one defeat in normal time against Hetton Lyons Cricket Club in a match played at Anfield.

Todays game was very closely contested and the Crawley Green were unfortunate to lose the their goal keeper through injury half way through the first half. The visitors fell behind five minutes before the break when Talibi opened his account for the afternoon. Talibi scored again just a minute into the second period and St Joseph's thought they were on there way through. Crawley Green almost immediatley made a couple of substitutions and changed the formation which began to put a lot of pressure on the home side. They were rewarded when Danny Swan got clear of the defence and slotted on sixty four minutes. All square on seventy three when a Mark Bunker free kick caused the home keeper all sorts of problems ended up in the back of the net. Just when the tie looked to be heading for extra time the man Talibi was in the right place to score the winner and complete his hat trick. Entertaining afternoon for the spectators and is this the begining of another long run in this competition for St Joseph's. Pictures from the game attached'.

Andy reports (via E-Mail): '...yesterday was so glorious (even this far north), I simply couldn't pass up the opportunity of an autumn morning walk in beautiful Coverdale (between Middleham and Kettlewell). Finishing after noon didn't leave a great deal of time to find a new 'tick', so I opted for rugby union (again!). On back roads, it took an hour and a half to reach the southern suburbs of Middlesbrough for Acklam's Durham Northumberland Division One game with promotion favourites Darlington at Talbot Park. Minimal ground facilities (club house, one side barriered with hardstanding, no cover, no lights), but amazing views south to the industrial Teesside skyline. Note the Tees Transporter Bridge! Darlington led 12-3 at half-time, and won 24-11 in front of 105 (h/c) spectators, scoring four tries to one. Admission was free, with a basic eight-page programme selling for £1'.

WebEd - Car problems on Saturday scuppered any chances of a new ground visit at Hopton FC in a Norfolk Junior Cup tie ...a suspected damaged clutch saw the Wraymobile sadly come to a standstill on the A11 a few miles outside Thetford...after being towed back to our garage in racing HQ by a kind AA man it allowed us just enough time to walk up to Cricketfield Road for an enforced re-visit...a decent ECL Premier Division game saw the Jockeys record only their second win of the season against fellow basement side Felixstowe...every cloud and all that...hopefully with eyes focused on Suffolk Junior Cup action normal service can be resumed this coming weekend!!

Monday 10th October - Latest Images: Andy Gallon - This week egg-chasing Andy takes in the Durham Northumberland League Div 1 fixture at Hartlepool Rovers RUFC (v Gosforth) at The New Friarage played on 08/10/11...don't miss all the mouth-watering matchday pictures...now added to the Rugby Union album in the new FGIF gallery...

Andy writes (via E-Mail): '...it was rugby union again for me yesterday, albeit a superb ground I've wanted to visit for many years. Hartlepool Rovers were, until the 1970s, one of the North's stronger union clubs, and the facilities (two stands, terracing and floodlights) at The New Friarage reflect their former status. Constant mizzle meant attempting general ground pics was fairly pointless, but I did, from the sanctuary of the West View Road cover, manage some half-decent action shots. In front of a crowd of 140 (h/c), Rovers beat Gosforth 26-3 in a Durham Northumberland Division One fixture. Admission was £3 and included a 20-page programme. This was a colour, glossy shell of 12 pages with an eight-page photocopied insert carrying details relevant to the game'.

Bob also reports (via E-Mail): 'The very pleasant weather of the weekend inspired me to take in the first round of the Hertfordshire Senior Sunday Cup. My chosen game was Stevenage side Dun Cow, current leaders of the Stevenage Sunday League Premier Division and Colne Valley Blues of the Olympian Sunday League.

The match turned out to be a bit of a mis match as the experienced Stevenage side played a controlled first half to lead 3-1. In the second however they really turned on the style against their younger opponents and found the net another 10 times for a final score of 13-1. I'm sure they'll find tougher opposition in the rounds ahead though'.
