13/04/05 Leon's Programme News - went to Old Newton (SIL) last night. No programme when I arrived and the secretary told me they decided not to bother, despite the opposition being near neighbours and title chasers AFC Debenham therefore the crowd was good. At half time this crazy looking old women with long flowing silver hair arrived with bundles of paper stuffed under her arm and spent 30 minutes sat down cross legged on the grass stapling the programme together. However if anyone forgot to hand in their University keys could they please send them to the University as I will be charged for their loss !

Re - the Newton A Spurs game on Easter Monday: it appears that a goal claim by the visiting 'keeper will not stand. It was actually an OG by the defending keeper, the Bucks keepers free kick from his own half was for an offside, therefore indirect, it was only the Spurs keepers attempt at palming it away from goal that made it stand, the Ref confirmed that without the attempted save it would have been dissallowed as an indirect kick !

Please update my Anorak record of games since 0-0 draw to 57 (& counting !) please. WebEd - no problem and thanks Phil for all your hard work in making the weekend another great success!

The programme which contains a massive 96 pages has been signed by the players from both teams. Any 'hopper, programme collector etc wishing to make an offer to buy it can do so by using the IMS. The proceeds will be sent on to club secretary Ray Heard at the end of March.

01/03/05 Hopping News: Andy Molden - Mick Burt went to Axminster last Saturday and they said to him if that they progressed through to the cup game (which is now on Easter Sunday - ref Phil Hiscox) they would make it a Groundhop Day. WebEd - confirmed! See latest Devon Hop details!

The Quarry Nomads game you went to (
on 01/01.05 v Kidlington) has been the largest home attendance (39) at the club for some time! I can also report that last Saturday's game at Clanfield had a crowd of 15 as confirmed in the league handout. According to club secretary Keith Dolton half of the attendance were from Quarry. Yes the crowds at a number of clubs in Division One are worrying low. Quarry's away games are quire often watched by less than 20 and I don't think this a reflection on the club despite them not being any good at the moment.

10/02/05 Hopping News: Dave Reed - Can I suggest another category for the Anoraks page?  Longest run of games without a 0-0.  Last night’s result at Tunbridge Wells brought my personal run (and record) of 124 games to an end.  However, it was not a bad game with both sides having shots cleared off the line and visitors Deal hitting the post and bar.

08/02/05 Hopping News: Dennis Woods - My friend Eddie is thinking of driving to Godmanchester Rovers on Saturday, so I will go along with him.  No doubt this is fairly close to where you live.  We have planned to go there before but have decided against it for one thing or another, but hopefully we can get there this weekend.

I also went to West Ham v Cardiff City on Sunday.  I think that might be my last visit of the season, too expensive.  My ticket cost £31 in the Bobby Moore stand (behind the goal).  My seat was in row Z, the back row and 1 seat away from the side screen.  If I faced directly forward I had a fantastic view of the East Stand roof.  Of course I moved from this location to a seat lower down and 22 seats and a staircase across from my original seat and I was now directly in line with the touch line.  Both ends behind each goal are now out of line with the pitch as the new West Stand was built further back and the pitch moved back with it to accommodate the future development of a new East Stand, if it ever happens.  Shame there wasn't a bit of forward planning in the first place, when they built the two ends.

Although we won 1-0 (89th minute) we were very poor and I think we have the worst team I have every seen wearing our colours.  I was thinking of going to see us play Crewe on a Tuesday night in March, but I think I will save my money.  We need to lower our prices or our crowds will drop even more next season if we don't go up.

08/02/05 Hopping News: Andy Molden -  As I am now on AOL I get free Web space, my site the address is below. I will use it to give news from around the Oxford area and put end  of season fixtures on it. It's really easy to operate, a moron could do it.

06/02/05 Hopping News: Dave Reed - Stansfeld O & B FC - I see that you were in my neck of the woods on Saturday.  Just in case you were not aware, the ground that you visited was the previous home of Thames Poly (ex Kent League) who were Woolwich Poly in a previous existence. The last time that I went there the stand had a roof!

I went to Kintbury Rangers on Saturday who kicked off at 3pm and didn’t use their floodlights.  Not sure whether they are operational.  The programme was as detailed earlier.   Decent game won 1-0 by the home side against Englefield Green Rovers.

27/01/05 Club News: Ian McDonald - 27/1 Sadly I doubt you will be receiving a Moor Green (NCN) programme in the next few weeks. On Tuesday night our main stand and changing rooms were destroyed by an arson attack. The bar, offices etc were also damaged. I will keep you posted. We have received offers from local clubs (Solihull, Worcester) to use their facilities if we need to but next few games look certain to be postponed.

26/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Mike Latham - Stranraer (Scottish League)

25/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Dave Reed – I had a trip to Hampshire on Saturday with my travelling companion Ken Kenealy to take in the clash between Locks Heath and Poole Town.  It was fine when we first arrived at the ground but, not unexpectedly, it was raining by three o'clock with the second half being particularly wet.  With no cover, it was rather difficult to keep my umbrella up and make notes on the game but the second placed visitors came out on top against the third placed home side.  The twenty page programme which sold for £1 was adequate and a bucket collection was made during the second half.  Despite the inclement weather it was a decent day out.

25/01/05 Programme News: Rod Grubb - by the way, Dudley Sports did a 12 page 'programme' for their home game at our place on Saturday given away. All adverts apart from the names of both sides in the middle. Better than last season's where we never even got a mention!!!!!!!!!

24/01/05 Hopping News: Rod Grubb - met a chap at our home game last week and he gave me the following info. about a book he is writing and said he would be including the Griff match therein. Have you heard of him? Thought you might be interested in it anyway:

DENNIS THE ASTRONOMER

The places and faces of English non-league football

The book will be published in late June 2005 and will be a record of my observations, abstract thoughts, hopes and comments about the beautiful game. Written during the 2004-05 season the story starts at Lincoln United and ends...somewhere in May 2005! Taking in matches at Bath City to Ossett Albion, Spalding United to Willenhall Town, Corby Town, Gresley Rovers, Stalybridge Celtic, Brackley Town, Glapwell and over fifty more venues. Be deafened by the P.A. system at Hucknall Town, see Carlton Town score six in forty minutes at Lincoln Moorlands - and miss a penalty. Over fifty matches discussed and each article features a copy of the programme cover, many will have original photos and memorabilia illustrations. Over 240 pages with eight full colour pages of programme covers, club badges and photographs, this fun-packed book will be £11.99 (+ £2 p and p)

To be placed on our mailing list and find out how to be included in the books' list of subscribers please send your name and address to - Richard Panter, 32 Old Way, Hathern, Leic, LE12 5HN

17/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Barry Neighbour – Sawbridgeworth T (ESL) and Port Vale v Brentford (FL1)

17/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Dave Reed - no traumas this week.  Just a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at Wellingborough Whitworths where the home side went down 5-3 to Eynesbury Rovers.  Entrance was £1 for which I got a perfectly respectable 24 page programme inside a shiny colour cover.

I had a peep through the fence at the old Wellingborough ground which seems to be in use (by a junior side?) judging by the state of the pitch.  There appeared to be work going on to re-lay hard standing etc but I couldn't see very much

16/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Paul Roth – Poole Town (Wessex div 2). The club provided a superb 64 page programme full of relevant comment. Obviously a labour of love. You might imagine that this is the best programme in the division but in October I visited Amesbury Town. Their matchday offering for a Tuesday night was of heroic proportions.

16/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Dennis Woods – Farnborough NE (Wessex)

16/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Andy Sneddon – Greenhill (MCFL3)

14/01/05 Programme News: Rod Grubb - Needham Town (ECL);  Bosham (SCL); Huntingdon T (UCL); Cobham Sports (Dorset Lge). All Midland Combination Premier Division clubs are supposed to issue for all matches including midweek and invariably do but there will always be one exception and that is Continental Star where you will be lucky to pick one up at any time.

13/01/05 Programme News: Peter Abbott - Kennek Ryhope (Northern Lge 2)

12/01/05 Anorak: Barry Neighbour - I throw down the Gauntlet! 09/10/2004 - Bedfont Green v Cranleigh  11 - 0 CCL and 17/8/2004 Yateley Green v Farnborough North End Wessex League 0-16 (Yateley held them out for 20 minutes as well!)

12/01/05 Praise for FGIF: Mike Latham - I think your website is absolutely fantastic and if we can help to publicise this daft hobby of ours then it can only be good for us all.  I'll send you some more photos next weekend and every match I go to I'll take a few shots.  Good to know I'm not the only nutter about!  I do a radio show on RL on BBC Radio Lancashire every Wednesday and I managed to slip in a mention for your website tonight on the show, saying it would be good if RL had a website like yours. Keep up the good work.  By the way the Viking Fish Bar near the KC Stadium is fantastic!

11/01/05 Club News: Roderick Grubb - Hinckley United' s proposed move to the new Marston Stadium has been put back a further month as various things have still not been finished and the new projected date is 26 February when Bradford Park Avenue are the visitors.

10/01/05 Hopping News: Andy Sneddon - I went nowhere in the end on Saturday. It was dire over here so gave it a miss. Squires Gate's game (NWC1) was called off because of structural damage but it appeared the damage was actually at the adjoining Blackpool Rovers ground where a number of roof panels had been blown off the stand. As the two grounds are back to back I could see where the risk to players at Squires Gate would be. The winds at Blackpool Airport (less than a mile from the grounds) on Saturday morning were up to around the 80mph mark so it's no surprise things were disappearing!

I put Mike Latham onto the site, he loves it! Mike's a good mate of mine, we go back years through our obsession for grounds and our passion for Rugby League.

10/01/05 Hopping News: Dave Reed – West Country capers! Another little adventure to report from last Saturday.  I was a passenger in a car heading for Weston Super Mare.  Despite the best efforts of a Transit van to force us into the central reservation of the M4, we arrived at the motorway services at about twelve o'clock to confirm that the game was on.  We located the ground in Weston and then went into town where two of us adjourned to the bar on the station for a couple of halves whilst our other passenger went for a walk into the town.  The two of us returned to the ground at about ten past two to discover that the game had been called off.  Whilst waiting for our third member to re-appear we called the nearest and probably only feasible replacement fixture at Clevedon but could get no reply.  However, once our walker had turned up we decided to try Clevedon more in hope than expectation.  Imagine our delight to arrive at the ground at 2.50 to find the game on.  Although all three of us had been there before, we were more than happy in the circumstances to get a game in.  Four goals for the home side as well, thus bringing to an end for me of a run where the home side had not scored for about 500 minutes.  The programme was 28 pages inside a colour cover for £1.30 and reasonably good value.

07/01/05 Interesting Web Site: Leon Gladwell – I have asked the guy who runs the excellent 'Diary of Some Groundhopping' site to link Football Grounds in Focus to his site. He's a decent chap and has given me invaluable help with euro trips in the past.

I thought perhaps you might like to link his site to yours? It's in German but the pix are excellent. The address is: www.groundhopping.de

06/01/05 Hopping News: Barry Neighbour - I am forsaking the luxurious surroundings of
Kenilworth Road (v Brentford) on Saturday planned visit to Sawbridgeworth in the Essex Senior League. The following Saturday we are planning a
trip up to Port Vale to see the Bees. Glad to see Hull
catch Luton I am sure it is only a matter of time before you hit the front
and as I predicted pre Season go onto win the league. I have always rated
Peter Taylor as a manager from his early days at Dartford. I think you have
a quality Team, Manager and a superb stadium which I managed to visit last
year. Bees are rebuilding under Martin Allen we have played some quality
football this season but are badly lacking someone to finish the moves of.
We may push for the final play off places if lucky but we need another
couple of years if we can keep Martin Allen that long. . Have enjoyed looking
at the website and am only too pleased to contribute as I tend to watch
about 120 games a season with about 50 new grounds visited so everything is
new and different. Dennis Woods put me onto the site and I have since
recommended it to a few other `Hoppers` on the net.

05/01/05 Programme News: Rod Grubb - Staines Lammas (CCL); Chard Town (WL1) and Atherstone Town (MCFL)

04/01/04 Club News: Andy Molden – Quarry Nomads v Kidlington (on 01/01/05) - I was speaking to Keith Dolton (Quarry Nomad’s sec) yesterday and he told me that at the end of the game he found a number of programmes on the floor of the Kidlington dressing room. He had asked them earlier if they wanted all their programmes (as per league rules - 5 to away team plus free one's to away officials) they just left them dumped in their dressing room!. The problems "rules" can cause.

He also told me that he had spent over an hour (with the Chairman) clearing dog muck from the pitch before the game. As he says you just can't win!

04/01/05 Leon’s Lines – matches featuring Halfax (Conference); Padiham (NWCL) and Stocksbridge Park Steels (Unibond) added.

04/01/05 Travellers’ Tale: Dave Reed – holiday travels – various including  Eastbourne Borough; Sidley; Folkestone; Chessington United; Amersham; Hanwell Town; Met Police; Maldon Town; Flackwell Heath; Mile Oak and Horsham YMCA.
So eleven games and forty one goals later, I was glad to get home for a rest!

03/01/05 Programme News: Rod Grubb - Barnt Green Spartak v Nuneaton Griff - no programme issued but another 3 points for Griff!

03/01/05 Hopping News: Andy Sneddon - back home after a "smooth as silk" sort of a day, hope yours was as easy and hassle free. Bearing in mind these are the very first (photos) I've shot off I've attached a small number from Irchester United v St Ives Town (1-4 att 62, 4pp prog 50p). The stills are OK but I think the action shots need some work! The small stand (at one end, offset) is useful but it was a nice morning so we stayed outdoors.

Godmanchester Rovers picked up their 2nd win of the season in the afternoon with a 3-1 win over Saffron Walden (attendance 80;  28pp programme free with £3 admission). I have to confess to being so busy talking business with both clubs that the camera never made it out of the van. Must become more disciplined!

03/01/05 Programme News: Dennis Woods - from Holyport and Wokingham & Emmbrook (both Hellenic 1E) on 03/01/05. To save you counting the pages Holyport issued a 36 pager with a glossy cover for their game with Badshot Lea for £2 including admission.  On the same day Wokingham & Emmbrook issued a 20 pager for their game with Chalfont Wasps, which was also £2 including admission.

It was nice to meet you at the games.  I hope you enjoyed Derby's 1-0 win at Reading.

03/01/05 Travellers’ Tales: Barry Neighbour – holiday travels including Brentford (FL1);  Shepton Mallett (WL1);  Timsbury Athletic (SomSnrLge); Biddestone (WL1); Bedmond S&S (HSCL); Forest Green Rovers (Conf); Flackwell Heath (Ryman2) and The Bees v Walsall. (FL1).

03/01/05 Message: Paul Roth - Nice to see you at Holyport this morning.
A super website you have here. Hope Wokingham and Reading were entertaining.

02/01/05 Leon’s Lines – reports from Northampton Spencer (UCL) and Banbury Utd (NCS) added

02/01/05 Hopping News:Andy Sneddon - Happy New Year!

We'll be getting down towards your territory tomorrow, doing Irchester United @ Noon followed by Godmanchester Rovers @ 3pm.

I'm also now armed with a rather nice little zoom lens digital camera, so expect a few photos to be winging your way for the site over the next few months.

We hadn't intended doing New Bradwell on the 28th...Buckingham Athletic was the first choice but a very fussy ref put paid to that at 2-30pm. Both sides were more than happy to play (the pitch was almost perfect apart from a couple of small patches) but he obviously wanted to be at home with the wife. We made dash to New Bradwell to save the day.

21/12/04 Programme News: Rod Grubb - regarding Shipston - the message I have is that they do not guarantee to issue for every match but do for most. Polesworth tell me that they are also issuing again on a regular basis.
My friend in Liverpool, John Hopkins, tells me that long-time issuers South Liverpool are now also issuing regularly for their Reserve team in the I Zingari Division 3 which must be a first for that league.

Also Stourbridge (Midland Alliance) and Bamber Bridge; Prescot Cables; Marine and Burscough (all Unibond).

21/12/04 Hopping News: Dave Reed - my friend Ken and I attempted to visit Worcester Park last Saturday but having rung the ground from a pub in Wimbledon and been told that the game was off, we switched our attentions to Corinthian Casuals. (Programme 28 pages for £1.50).  Imagine my surprise on Sunday morning to read Worcester Park 3 Seelec Delta 1!!!  Oh well, there's always another day.
